What really causes swollen gums to occur is poor dental hygiene. Bacteria from food particles left in the mouth. Gums that are swelling is most likely to be a symptom of gum disease. Gingivitis as the mildest form of gum disease may cause swollen gums to occur, infection in the oral cavity, lack of vitamins and nutrition, allergic reaction and even a symptom of certain medical condition. Hormones may cause gums to swell in women, blood flow increases when hormone level increases.
Swollen gums are being indicated by red tender gums and painful gums when brushing. Untreated swollen gums may progress to advance periodontal disease, can trigger certain medical condition and eventually tooth loss. Proper dental hygiene is the key to be prevented from swollen gums and gums disease combined with the right foods, healthy lifestyle and regular dental visits.
